“我到了, I came to pay my respects.”
In the performance, Wen Pei reads Lige’s writing in English about their grandmother, while Lige recites the Hokkien lyrics of 彩霞, a song that Wen Pei wrote in 2021 to process the grief around their grandmother’s passing that year.
Wen Pei and Lige stand parallel to each other, mirroring each other’s voicings while offering space for the other to sound. Language, story and song were exchanged and shared – an attempt to reach another that is at a distance. Each other, and each other’s loved ones.
The performance took place on Thursday 17th July from 4.30pm to sunset at UNSW Art and Design’s Napier Street entrance, signalling the final piece of their month-long observation.
